  • Bastion in the Air Exhibition at The Collection, Danes Terrace, Lincoln, LN2 1LP

10am-4pm

Discover Lincolnshire’s story of aviation development, production, and defence in World War One at an exhibition at The Collection in Lincoln.

This Bastion in the Air exhibition focusses on the rising threat to Britain from aerial attacks by airships, the British response to that threat, featuring a host of artefacts, models, images, and much more.

Some of the items on display:

The original Victoria Cross awarded to William Leefe Robinson for his actions in shooting down a German airship in September 1916, with parts of the wreckage presented to him;

Decorations and badges of German airship crew members, on loan from German museums and never displayed in the UK before;

Original uniforms, memorabilia and stories of members of the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Air Service;

Munitionettes. Women stepped in to help the war effort on a huge scale and many were recruited to make munitions. Nicknamed ‘munitionettes’ they helped make Lincolnshire one of the world’s largest aircraft manufacturing centres.

‘All About Daisy’. A special collection of postcards and letters shared with her loved ones provides a unique insight into the true story of Daisy Lavender, a real-life ‘Heroine of the Home Front’ from Lincolnshire.

Don’t miss the accompanying exhibition at RAF Scampton: a recreation of a WWI airfield on display from April 5th – August 31st.

  • The Big Butterfly Count

The big butterfly count is a nationwide survey aimed at helping us assess the health of our environment. It was launched in 2010 and has rapidly become the world’s biggest survey of butterflies. Over 60,000 people took part in 2017, submitting 62,500 counts of butterflies and day-flying moths from across the UK.

Butterflies react very quickly to change in their environment which makes them excellent biodiversity indicators. Butterfly declines are an early warning for other wildlife losses.

That’s why counting butterflies can be described as taking the pulse of nature.

The count will also assist us in identifying trends in species that will help us plan how to protect butterflies from extinction, as well as understand the effect of climate change on wildlife.

imply count butterflies for 15 minutes during bright (preferably sunny) weather during the big butterfly count. We have chosen this time of year because most butterflies are at the adult stage of their lifecycle, so more likely to be seen. Records are welcome from anywhere: from parks, school grounds and gardens, to fields and forests.
