A ‘new tradition’ may seem like an oxymoron – a contradiction in terms. We like to think of family traditions as things that have always happened, but all traditions must start somewhere. And they don’t all have to start all at once; new traditions evolve and are built upon each year.

For many in Lincoln a treat to the theatre at Christmas is one such tradition and there is a surprising amount of choice on offer for such a small city.  It’s hard not to miss the war of the pantos waging across the city every year but we know that pantomime is not everyone’s cup of tea and if your children are already booked to see a panto with school or grandparents, then maybe it would be nice for you to take them to see something else, something a bit special and Lincoln Performing Arts Centre has just the ticket.

This year’s big Christmas family show at Lincoln Performing Arts Centre is Rapunzel. It is not a pantomime, it is a magical musical play adapted from the original fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. From the creative team behind last year’s enchanting Robin Hood & Maid Marian and performed by University of Lincoln’s graduating Drama students, this is a festive treat for the whole family.

One of the things that really sets this Christmas theatre show apart from anything else on offer in the city is the original music score, which has been composed by the renowned opera tenor Mark Wilde. Under Wilde’s direction, the cast will deliver a glorious vocal performance. There’s also impressive puppetry, quick wit to entertain grown-ups and classic physical humour to hold the attention of even the most fidgety of young audience members.

Rapunzel is recommended for ages six and up but did you know that Lincoln Performing Arts Centre also produces a Christmas theatre show specifically for children aged 3+? Penguins! Penguins! Penguins! uses traditional story-telling to take you on an adventure with Barry, a penguin born into the long nights of the Antarctic Winter who goes out in search of summer sun. Performed in the Studio and at less than an hour long this is a great first theatre experience.

Perhaps this year you’re ready to start a new tradition; one that is just the right fit for your family and will give you many years of wonderful memories to come.
